Rolling stone 1983
THE SMITHSLead singer Morrissey (left) has staked out rather large territory for his band: saving popular music. “It’s quite lifeless, faceless, synthetic. I can’t think of anybody I’d cross the street to see,” he says. “Just to see modern music in its present state is like seeing a kitten dying.” Thus far, the band, which hails from Manchester, has released only one single, “Hand In Glove,” in Britain. Like the rest of the Smiths’ music, it’s guitar-driven rock & roll, with lyrics about sex and love. As Morrissey says, “I want to get back to affairs of the heart.”
